Start A New Career in the Insurance Field
In America, just about anything can be insured. If you own and drive a car, you are required by law to find an insurance agent and buy car insurance. Every mortgaged home is insured. Over $1 trillion dollars in insurance premiums will be paid to insurance companies this year alone for everything from cell phones to pets. Insurance sales agents aren’t going away anytime soon.
If you want a recession-proof, stable, long term career that lets you work when and where you want, this is quite possibly the career for you! As an independent insurance sales agent, you have the freedom to work from home, an office of your choice or the beach when you’re on a permanent vacation! You truly control your own destiny in this field. You can make as much as $150,000 a year working full time, or as much as $25,000 working part time for supplemental income. Only about 1 in 5 insurance agents work more than 40 hours a week.
According the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the demand for insurance sales agents will increase over the next 10 years by 9%. That’s 2% faster than all other occupations. Employment growth will likely be strongest for independent sales agents as insurance companies rely more on brokerages and less on captive agents as a way to control costs.
Employment growth should be strongest for agents selling health and long-term care insurance. As the population ages over the next decade, demand will likely increase for packages that cover long-term care.
Insurance sales agents commonly sell one or more types of insurance, such as property and casualty, life, health, and long-term care insurance.
Property and casualty insurance agents sell policies that protect people and businesses from financial loss resulting from automobile accidents, fire, theft, and other events that can damage property. For businesses, property and casualty insurance also covers workers’ compensation claims, product liability claims, or medical malpractice claims.
Life insurance agents specialize in selling policies that pay beneficiaries when a policyholder dies. Life insurance agents also sell annuities that promise a retirement income.
Health and long-term care insurance agents sell policies that cover the costs of medical care and assisted-living services in old age. They also may sell dental insurance and short-term and long-term disability insurance.
Agents may specialize in any one of these products or become generalists by providing multiple products.
